The piers of IJmuiden
The piers of IJmuiden were once constructed to prevent the silting-up of the harbour entrance and to offer ships a safe passage to the locks. The long Zuidpier is an excellent spot for a walk or an afternoon of fishing.
It's a great place to enjoy the breeze, with the sea on either side. With a little luck, you can even spot some seals or porpoises. The fishermen are happy to show you their catch, and can tell you a lot about the fish. Birdwatchers also regularly visit the piers, as various rare birds happily fill their bellies here on their migration. In addition to these wonderful natural elements, the industry, shipping and the vast number of surfers create a very dynamic seascape from the piers. And it looks different every day. What are you waiting for? Go enjoy that lovely breeze!
