Dutch Linseed Oil

Since 2013, we have grown our own 'Dutch Linseed Oil' for several of our products. Linseed oil is a plant-based oil that has been used as the best binding agent for paints for centuries.

Dutch Linseed Oil

Due to the chemical industry, the linseed oil in most modern paints has been replaced with fossil binding agents. That's a shame, as fossil oil leads to additional CO2 emissions, and will eventually run out. Linseed oil, on the other hand, can be resown and harvested year after year.

We have made modern linseed oil paints since the 70s, and now, since 2013, we have done so using Dutch linseed oil. Windmills at the Zaanse Schans pressed this oil out of linseed cultivated in the Haarlemmermeer area.

Every year, our partner RVR Loonbedrijf sows about 10 hectares, resulting in 30 tonnes of linseed. This seed is 'pressed' into oil by the oils mills at the Zaanse Schans, and yields about 10,000 litres of Dutch Linseed Oil. With this, we cover about 25% of our total linseed oil needs.

We made a funny video about this:
