The challenge
The Mausoleum is a National Monument designed by municipal architect J. Leijh and was originally commissioned in 1894. In 1972 and 1999, adjustments were made to the Mausoleum, and the time had come for another significant renovation of the roof, façade and the woodwork. A historical colour study was performed by Ms. Judith Bohan of Judith Bohan Interieur Restauratie from Linschoten. This study showed that the current colours differ from the original ones. The decision was made to restore the original colours. The woodwork (especially near the gutter) was in severe condition (wood rot). Likewise, the façade (which had been finished with conventional wall paint) had taken some damage over the years. Apart from the exterior, a significant part of the interior will be pained, too. This includes the woodwork and the walls.
The solution
The current exterior finish coats were no longer in adequate condition, and required a thorough paint job. The decision was made to remove all defective coats before fully treating the woodwork with a coat of Toplin Primer, followed by a coat of Toplin Lacquer High Gloss. The façade was given a conventional finish. The decision was made to continue this way. After removing the defective coats, the bare parts were touched up. Then, the entire substrate was treated with Deko Supercoat twice.
The interior will also see a return to the original colours. After all leakages were resolved, the walls and ceilings were treated with Deko Supercoat. For the woodwork, a conventional acrylate paint in the form of Ekodur Lacquer Interior Satin was used. Given the condition of the paintwork, 1 x touch-up, 1 x primer and 2x lacquer were required to achieve a beautiful result. The transparently finished door was treated with a synthetic finish. To treat this finish, the Original Yacht Lacquer was used. This lacquer offers an absolutely enchanting high gloss and a lovely depth effect!
