Frequently asked questions

The final coat of SKYLT has dried, and now our floor has matte and glossy streaks/spots. The floor was finished with SKYLT Original.

This may happen if the 2 components of the SKYLT Original were not sufficiently mixed or were applied in an incorrect ratio. You can solve this by lightly polishing the surface with P120 sandpaper. After adding the hardener, you should firmly shake the packaging for several minutes. Afterwards, lacquer the floor again.

Our floor was recently finished with SKYLT Original and is now more glossy than it was just after lacquering. How is this possible, and how can this be solved?

In these cases, the floor has often been cleaned with an inappropriate detergent. Many standard floor cleaning products leave soap residue, which will, over time, create a glossy effect. You should always use SKYLT Conditioner for the regular maintenance of your SKYLT floor. SKYLT Conditioner was specially developed to retain the ultra-matte look of SKYLT. You can fix the floor by cleaning it once with STEP Intensive Cleaner and mopping it with clean water afterwards. That way, you'll remove all soap and dirt residue from the floor. This will bring back the ultra-matte look of SKYLT again.

Can you finish a table(top) with SKYLT?

Yes, we offer SKYLT Original in 0.5-litre packaging specifically for this purpose. SKYLT is highly suitable for providing furniture and floors with an invisible protective coat.

Are SKYLT Original #5510 and SKYLT Titanium #5550 resistant to heat and plate sliding?

Yes, but recommend using coasters. Potential heat rings will disappear within a few days. 

Can you use the product in proportion, so half a can/bottle with half hardener, and will the hardener still be good after opening?

The hardener has a limited shelf life after opening. The hardener reacts to moisture: squeeze the air ouf the pouche well. 

Can SKYLT Titanium #5550 be used on bathroom furniture and in humid areas?

That is possible, but make sure there is good ventilation in the room. And don't allow water to stand on it for a long time. 

What is the mixing ratio of SKYLT Titanium #5550?

The mixing ratio (A : B in weight) of SKYLT Titanium #5550 is 10 : 1. 

Is SKYLT Titanium #5550 resistant enough for a heavy traffic such as in restaurants?

SKYLT Titanium #5550 is certainly very well suited for this. Of course, the floor must be well maintained. 

Why shall I use SKYLT Conditioner #9140 (or SKYLT Conditioner #9141 Spray & Wipe) on a surface finished with SKYLT Original #5510 or SKYLT Titanium #5550?

The SKYLT Conditioner #9140 (or SKYLT Conditioner #9141 Spray & Wipe) leaves no soap residue. Other cleaning products can make the floor shine (soaf film) or there may be bleaching agents in the product that affect the lacquer layer. 

After which layers should I sand when using SKYLT Titanium #5550?

When using only SKYLT Titanium #5550, sanding is required between the second and the third layer. 

When using SKYLT Recoatable Colour Oil #5050, #5051 or #5052, sanding is necessary after the first layer. The wood fibers will set up less, so that less heavy or no polishing is required. 

Some SKYLT Titanium #5550 got on the painted skirting boards. How can this be removed?

The SKYLT Titanium #5550 could be removed with a solution of 35% ammonia in water. 

Can I apply SKYLT Original #5510 or SKYLT Titanium #5550 over unknown lacquer layers and/or PU (plastic) surfaces?

No, this is not possible. And we recommend sanding wooden surfaces completely bare before applying SKYLT. 

Are SKYLT Original #5510 and SKYLT Titanium #5550 resistant to medical alcohol?

SKYLT Original #5510 and SKYLT Titanium #5550 are resistant to a 48% solution of ethanol. We test this ourselves: we leave it for an hour without problems, so taking it off will certainly not be a problem. We would advise not to use a solution stronger than 70%. 

Note: it must be real ethanol. The so-called rubbing alcohol is quite different (isopropylalcohol). 

Can you cover a freshly lacquered floor with a "breathing" floor protection?

This can be done for a couple hours. It is strongly advised not to leave it longer. The lacquer needs oxygen to harden properly. If the floor is covered and shows damages, it can be polished and re-lacquered. 

Can a smoked floor be finished with SKYLT, and which SKYLT product shall I use?

Smoked floors can be finished with SKYLT. SKYLT does not contain any white pigment. 

On dark woods, we recommend SKYLT Titanium #5550, but SKYLT Original #5510 is also widely used. The colouring is a matter of taste. A test on a small area can make the difference visible. 

Note: If a lighter tint is chosen on a dark background, we recommend SKYLT Original #5510 as the first layer instead of SKYLT Primer #5020. 

Can I also use SKYLT Primer #5020 in combination with SKYLT Titanium #5550?

Technically this is possible, but it is not a logical choice. After all, SKYLT Titanium #5550 is used on dark woods, while SKYLT Primer #5020 is prescribed for light woods. On dark woods (read smoked oak and darker) the standard advice for invisible protection is therefore 3 layers of SKYLT Titanium #5550.
