We recommend applying STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood in any case to kambala (iroko), afzelia and basralocus, and if desired, as a precaution, to other exotic types such as jatoba or padouk. STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood isolates aggressive ingredients from tropical woods that can cause defects.
STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood can also be used on other types of wood. Because it enhances the glow of the wood, it is often chosen as an extra warm primer on oak, for example. If the product is only used for warm colouring, an intermediate drying time of 3-4 hours is sufficient.
The extra curing time is necessary for optimal insulation of certain aggressive ingredients. The next layer of varnish has then much less chance of reaching the wood and still pulling the ingredients upwards.
No, unfortunately, this is not possible. STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood enhances the wood glow and gives an extra warm colour. So it is either one or the other.
A compromise can be to finish the STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood with 2 layers of SKYLT Original #5510. The floor becomes then slightly paler.
In some planks, the concentration of calcium carbonate and rock salt, the cause of the white marks, can be so high that it exceeds the insulation capabilities of STEP Sealer #6100. STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood therefore reduces the risk of defects, but cannot prevent them 100% guaranteed.
If only a few deviations are visible, where the white marks coincide with the wood grain and feel slightly rough, then that is possible.
With the point of a sharp paint scraper, scrape away the varnish and the white streaks. Re-insulate the grain with STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood using a disposable brush. You only have to touch the bare grain. It is not necessary to tape and coat the entire plank. Repeat after 2 hours and let the STEP Sealer #6100 Tropical Wood dry for 24 hours. Then sand the entire surface and finish with one layer of the topcoat of your choice.
Are there many deviations and is it a white haze over parts of or even entire planks that simply feel smooth? Then local scratching makes no sense or is impracticable. The wood will then have to be sanded bare again. As a new finish, choose a 100% water-free product. Consider using ROYL Oil or ask for advice.
